Industrial Landscaping and Native Planting Scheme for New Business Park in Nottingham
This neglected former foundry works site in Nottingham is currently being developed into a new business park that offers good quality industrial and warehouse units for local businesses to rent or buy. SPA Landscaping was brought in to provide a basic planting scheme and industrial landscaping to match the quality and modern aesthetic of these new-build, high specification warehouse spaces.
For 50 years, the site had previously been home to BAS Castings, a foundry business that manufactured iron castings for a range of worldwide applications. After closing its doors in 2023, the 2.84-acre site was acquired by commercial property developer George Dutton Ltd, who is redeveloping the site into what will be known as Foundry Business Park – a nod to the site’s roots.
Our team was brought in to work around the exterior of these new units and the surrounding car park area by creating an industrial landscape of species-rich grassland and native specimen planting. We were also instructed to make it a low-cost installation to comply with the site’s planning requirements.
Choosing the right native trees, plants, shrubs and grasses for maximum effectiveness is essential, especially on an industrial site. Establishing native planting schemes such as these helps to improve air quality, manage flood risks and increase carbon capture, as well as supporting biodiversity with natural habitats that provide essential food and shelter for pollinators, birds and other wildlife in the local area. With new Biodiversity Net Gain legislation in effect in England, this type of planting scheme also helps a development hit its sustainability goals and maintain ecological compliance.
Another important factor is the aesthetic benefits of this type of planting. Opting for colourful, low-maintenance wildflowers and ornamental grasses, for example, creates a great visual impact that also requires minimal intervention to maintain once established. In turn, you create an easily presentable external area that leaves a lasting positive impression with both first-time visitors and regular workers alike – an impression that is invaluable when marketing new warehouse spaces for sale.

The site before development started had fallen into disrepair, and didn’t paint a welcoming picture for people or plant life.

Now, the modern warehouse units are complemented by clean car parking spaces and loading areas, and sleek, secure fencing. With the new planting schemes installed around the perimeter, we can’t wait to see how this industrial landscaping is all tied together once the grassland and native species begin to grow in.
