Grounds Maintenance Contract For International Bomber Command Centre
The SPA Landscaping team have been providing grounds maintenance services for the International Bomber Command Centre in Lincoln since 2017. Read more about our work in this world-class facility that honours the lives of men and women who paid the ultimate sacrifice for our continued freedoms during World War II.
The International Bomber Command Centre is a facility that acknowledges the efforts of Bomber Command during World War II. 57,861 men and women gave their lives supporting the work of the unit and the aim of the present-day International Bomber Command Centre is to never let their memories fade.
As a world-class facility the venue now hosts a series of events including concerts, dinner dances, family fun days and more military orientated events like the annual salute weekend. Conceived by the then Lord Lieutenant Of Lincolnshire, Tony Worth CVO in 2009 who formed a Trust to help bring to life his dream of building a memorial to commemorate the bravery and sacrifice of the fallen, we were involved in the grounds care for the site from 2017, just ahead of the opening ceremony in April 2018.
International Bomber Command Centre, Lincolnshire
The Chadwick Centre on the site, brings to life the experiences of those who served through state-of-the-art interactive displays.
The building at the centre of the venue houses digitised personnel and military documents, as well as recordings of firsthand testimonies of people who witnessed the activities of Bomber Command during the war. The area surrounding the building has also been developed to provide an outdoor space for visitors. The outdoor areas act as a place to gather in reflection of the vital work of the unit at a critical time for the liberty of Europe in the 20th Century as well as to educate visitors on the history of this important element in the war effort.
Our team was first drafted in to make a great number of landscape improvements across the site, and after significant renovation works, the gardens and landscape have been maintained by our team ever since.
The outdoor spaces at the International Bomber Command Centre provide a space for education, interest in this important historical venue and for quiet reflection.
We handle formal lawn maintenance, shrub and hedge maintenance, as well as tree surgery when needed and hard surface maintenance. Over the years this has included major reinstatement after events have been held at the site, including turf regeneration or replacement, planting work, fencing and making good on the green areas of the property. We’ve also had occasion to introduce wildflower maintenance to improve on the biodiversity of the site and take a whole site view of caring for all outdoor spaces.
We keep this major historic experience venue in its best shape through regular maintenance visits to the site, keeping acres of formal lawns in check as one of the many regular grounds maintenance tasks we undertake on site.
The property features two peace gardens that are set across 10 acres of landscaped grounds. The Lincolnshire Peace Garden contains 27 native Lime trees to mark each of the operational Bomber Command stations that were sited across the county during the war. Meanwhile the International Peace Garden pays homage to the 62 nations who served the Command and includes a flower and shrub bed to represent each of the 5 continents and the Peace Grove that provides for a quiet space for contemplative rest and silence.
As well as larger planted areas, such as the two peace gardens on site, there are smaller planting schemes to keep in check
It’s a varied site on a large plot, that needs to be kept in perfect condition year-round for visitors who come to the centre 12 months of the year. We’re proud to have worked on this site for many years now, keeping respectful order to such an important monument to the fallen of the Second World War.
